Sorry for the rant./r/Occult is a community centered around discussion of the occult, mysticism, esoterica, metaphysics, and other related topics, for those who likely believe that blind faith is the death of intelligence. I started looking at my own practices and traditions through hermetic lenses as well as the others. Solve et coagula.Īlso if you really dive into the oriental practices while having a thorough hermetic initiation, profound spiritual wisdom and insight can be attained, not to mention the benefits to a magical practice (if you have one) and the philosophical concepts of Bhakti yoga and Tantric Buddhism when practiced in conjunction with hermeticism and or daoism WILL enrich your life.įor example, when I REALLY started taking tarot seriously it changed my perspective on everything, when I began studying and practicing it with The I Ching, it changed my life forever. I do however consider him a modern hermetic and his work is a great amalgam. I don’t think Bardon was doing “what was popular” he was doing what worked. I also think that the spiritual dividends to be had are innumerable when applied to other areas. It also meshes very well with Daoist elemental theory and magical practice, I know it has given me a greater depth of understanding of my own practice. I also agree that his practice of magical evocation and Key to the true qaballah are also what he’s more known for, but TBH, his synthesis of tantra and Hinduism does mesh with hermeticism especially in regards to internal alchemy, albeit not in the classical sense. I agree that IIH is useful for magicians, but it’s also a great primer for internal alchemy. Although some of them may have remained silent or even pretended to. But the masters of these practices will never and have never viewed things in that way. It is in their personal interest to do so. Of course the priesthood of religions and mystic traditions are going to try and put the cultural differentiations and ceremonial/symbolic particulars on a pedestal. We have to get to the point where we start seeing spirituality as a human endeavor that has nothing at all to do with this culture or that culture. I mean predating all of that, even predating Judaism. If all you want to do is play dress up and devise clever rituals then you don’t need Bardon for that.Īnd when I say traditional Kabbalah, I don’t mean Jewish cultural-ism. The bottom line is that you absolutely have to learn how to think, feel, “speak” and “move” while in a state of complete freedom from any past or present influences of the physical plane or external world in order to truly practice Hermeticism. You may get feelings of self validation more quickly with those guys, but you will eventually hit a wall and stagnate in terms of your spiritual development. To compare the likes of Regardie, the Golden Dawn, or Crowley with Franz Bardon is laughable. His is a true path, but it is by no means a short path. Now, 20 years later, I have to agree with him. But that was before I studied and practiced the source material for eastern and western mysticism as well as traditional Kabbalah. I didn’t fully understand that or necessarily agree with that at first. Bardon’s view is that Kabbalah predates and is also the foundation of all serious “western” as well as all serious eastern mystic traditions and practices, Hermeticism included.
